Teruko entered after class and ordered a meal of chicken katsu, chicken teriyaki, and yakitori over rice. A nice hearty meal to sustain her during the rigorous practice for the dance in front of the Emporer.

Masako is so full of excitement, as she enters the café, seeing Teruko, walks over and asks, “Oh, Teruko, my friend, how nice to see you here, please may I set?
“Are you not just so excited over this opportunity we have to perform for the Emperor?
“What will sensei have us do, do you think, what is appropriate?” Masako talking so fast, she sounds like a little girl with a new doll.

"It will definately be something classic, something that stands the test of time. And it won't be simple. She'll want us to show off our skills."

“Do you know how soon it is? I must find something to calm me down some…teehee, maybe I’ll drink more during our ozashiki, think that will relax me?”

"You really shouldn't drink at your young age."

Masako laughs silly and says, "As if we can keep from it, they pour sake down me like it is water. These nasty men think I will do something to embarrass myself if they get me tipsy enough. But I have been drinking since I was very young, mother always told me I must learn to drink and not allow myself to give in to its effects.”

"I like Sake, I enjoy drinking, but I do not wish to get silly...teeheehee, sillier than I already am, that is. do not fear Teruko I will never embarrass us."

Masako is far too silly and young to worry about possible future damage to something she doesn’t even know what it’s for, so changing the topic, “Do you not simply adore these ozashiki, the gaiety, the different ones entertaining, teehee, the men, oh my, the men, and their trying to win our favors, when that is why we are there, to entertain them.”

"You flirt too much. Some of these men must be getting the wrong idea."

“According to mother, this game has been played for centuries, the Maiko flirts and toys with the customer, as he flirts back, he knowing she is untouchable, she also knowing this, but it is the game that counts, a sensuously tantalizing game of wits. He may think he has a chance, but only a very foolish Maiko would actually give her favors away, it would spoil her future abilities to earn much Yen.
“The most successful Geisha know how to keep men mesmerized by her, without her ever giving herself to them. It is a trick we must learn, going back to the Tayuu and Orion of the Edo period. Just think Teruko some of those ladies managed to drain nobles of all their wealth, and never actually give themselves to the poor fools. It is such a shame they were slaves to the houses they lived in, and never realized any of that wealth.
“But we do not have that hanging over us, once a few patrons take us, our expenses are paid, as mine are now, and much of what we will receive is ours. Mother was a past master of this art, as were many before her. It is my desire to be so also. By the time father and she got together, she did not really need him…well not to keep her in the life style she was used to.
“This is why I have so much excitement over these ozashiki. My purpose is to entice these men, the house makes more, the tea house makes more…teeheehee, I shall definitely make more, and hopefully never be bound to any one male…but live above these foolish children, and Teruko, live so very well also.
“And yes my sweet friend I am heartless, a heartless opportunist. This is the only way I know to escape my father’s hold on me, to become so desired, wanted, and “Paid” for, he will move to her other daughters. They are just brainless children themselves, following his every command.”

"Be careful. Some of those men might not be playing the game. They migh tthink they have the right to your body."

"That is the beauty of this game, they know it is impossible, yet they push, praying we give in to them, even knowing to do so will possibly ruin our reputation and future. The poor stupid Maiko who looses her way and submits to them...oh dear, she is the only one who will pay dearly for her indiscretion. Certainly not them, they can care less.
"Men; other than reproduction they have no earthly value. Even the gods knew this, after they made man as a model, did they not create woman as their highest and most perfect of all creations...teeheehee, possibly it did not happen as I say, but mother always told me it was so." Masako jokingly tells her friend.
