Been watching some vidios of Maiko, but their lips are colored top and bottom, and they still have the hair piece hanging down the left side of their faces, that's not right is it?

Depends on what level they are. immortalgeisha.com/faq_geisha.php#faq07As for the hair hanging down, that doesn't sound like the standard hairstyles for Kyoto Maiko. Maybe they are from another city? I don't know much about maiko from Nara or Osaka, or hangyoku from Tokyo. Just before she turns her collar (erikae) and becomes a geiko, there's the sakko hairstyle. www.immortalgeisha.com/hairstyles_maiko_pics.php#image08That or these videos you're talking about have fake maiko.

Possibly, they're the ones listed by Akeme above, looked over the sites you listed here, such elegance, it is easy to see why they are considered the standard of feminine beauty and style.

Oh, when you say hair piece, you're not taking about the hair. You're talking about the long dangling kanzashi. The phrase "hair piece" suggests a length of hair or a wig to me.

Sorry don't know the name for them, yes, the hanging piece as I understand it, is only on a 1st year Maiko, but also only lower lips colored, some in these vidios were wrong then, I half expected them ot be correctly dressed and made up

Well, maybe some of them were like second year maiko. I think they paint in the upper lip a little. Not full lips, but a little. I don't think the dangling kanzashi are abandoned after the first year.
A good thing to do is also look at the collars and how much their obiage is showing. That's another good way to figure out what stage a maiko is at.
That, or they're fake. Maybe some of the videos have furisode-san?

At least some of the videos. A bunch looked genuine at first glance.

Ah-Ha, Akeme, so nice to see to. You must be very busy the little we hear from you. Teruko, I must beg your pardon, in my ignorance it is quite possible I jumped, when I should have had my facts correct. After reading over a Hair styles and face make up site during the Maiko training, the videos are most likely fine.
