Masako looks over ar her friend and sees her just setting there, seemingly lost in thought and tries to get Teruko’s attention to find out why sher seems to be mentally somewhere else.

Teruko was a bit nervous about the Imperial performance. What if she made a mistake and shamed her hanamachi?

After class. Masako gets to Teruko and asks, “Please forgive me if I am wrong, but Teruko-san you seemed so far away in class, is there anything I might do, or say to make you feel better?"

"I don't want to bring shame to Mizuno."

Looking fondly at her friend, Masako smiles as she tells Teruko, "You, Teruko-san, bring shame to your house...you truly are the artist to be even thinking that, as if you could," Then teasingly she says, "If you want to worry, worry about this rattle brain.”

"Sensei was so stern after class... It got me worried." Her hand shook a little as she ground her ink. "Don't you ever get stage fright?"

“Here is what mother taught me, as you look out at the customers picture them in their underwear. Is this not a funny thought? As a result, no; never, not after seeing that in my mind.” Masako happily replies to her friend, reverting back to that childish young girl she hides behind.

"Hmmm.... A teenaged girl imagining old men in their underwear. How on earth is that supposed to keep one from being nervous? Maybe imagine them in giant chicken suits, or something like that."

What Teruko said cracked Masako up so, she roared with laughter, then tells her friend, “Oh wow! Teruko that is even better.”

Just as the teacher walked up behind Masako and rapped her on the side of her head, as she snidely says, “Well Masako, tell the class what is so funny about today’s calligraphy lesson."
Masako freezes not able ot think of what to say, so she replies, "Nothing, sensei, I am sorry."
So sensei tells her, "No you do not, you will not get away without telling this class why you were cackling so loudly."
Masako knew she could not involve Teruko, so she lies, “I was thinking of ways to not be frightened at the emperor’s birthday, I thought how silly all the people there would look dressed in chicken costumes…it struck me funny.”
Sensei actually smiles and tells Masako, "Except you were not paying attention to my class, this is very funny. Oh and Masako, it is very nice of you to not wish to involve Teruko-san, but we know it is she who thought of that...now back to work."

Teruko did that day's calligraphy, but it was uninspired. Her mind was elsewhere.

After being jumped by the teacher, Masako did not seem ot care about the rest of the lesson and was happy when it ended.
