The next morning Masako sees mother and after telling her of last night, asks, “Please mother, tell me, am I reduced to submitting to whatever these men want from me?”
“Come now Masako, you know your father only has your best interest in mind. Your whole life has been pointed toward now, just remember whatever you must do, never speak of it.”
As she walks to class, Masako thinks, I feel like I’m blindfolded and being fed to the lions.
As the calligraphy class assembles it soon becomes obvious the teacher is late. Masako takes this opportunity to tell Teruko about what happened after every one else left last night, what the man told her, then excitedly says, doing her best to hide her misgivings, “Is this not so great, all my expenses paid, Yen in my pocket, mother is pleased with my progress, father is happy with me, my mother must be so proud…for as long as it lasts, at least.”

"Wait... which mother did you talk to?"

“My house mother, the house is where the yen is going, so I thought I'd get a true reply from her, the balance between my welfare and more security for the house. If I had asked my mother I know what her reply would be, after all is this not what she trained me to be, but she sided with my mother and father…as you said yourself what I was raised to be.
“So it seems our destinies are before us, you to be a respected musician and Geiko…mine…well so be it.” The reality of her future now staring her in the face, no longer seems so glamorous.
It is a shame there is no other course for her life, so Masako will reluctantly follow it as many have before her.
Then as quickly she snaps out of her seriousness, as she says, “Being with these men will allow me to attend so many private parties, dinners, and who knows what…just a whirl wind of excitement.
“Excitement, parties, and dinners, Oh my…teeheehee.”

Teruko's brow crinkled at that. Poor girl was accepting her less-than-ideal circumstances.

Masako sees Teruko’s feelings about her, but is determined to look at the bright side of this because she will go to lots of nice parties and dinners.
