She has a fairly angular face although she does have plump cheeks. She has tanned skin(to the extreme disappointment of her sisters) and dark thick hair. Her hair is another one of those things that take after her father. Her mother's own hair was a disaster. It refused to be straight and there were always twisted ends and thin strands. Hanul's hair on the other hand is thick and smooth as well as a pure midnight black. She is used to getting her hair stroked and she usually stands still and smiles politely instead of getting annoyed. She has thick expressive eyebrows which usually change vividly depending on her mood. Her eyes are almond shaped and carry a dark brown color that occasionally appears black.
On the other hand her figure is something between average and square. She isn't ridiculously thin like some girls her age, nor does she care much about it. Her natural figure has a few slight curves at several remote locations and nothing else. She is also quite short which frustrates her occasionally when she can't seem to ever get to see anything but people's backs. Her arms and legs are also short which means she can't reach quite as far as anyone Else can. Her hands are usually dry and cracked. She has naturally long nails and occasionally, at school, when boys get on her nerves she'll pinch them as hard as she can to get rid of them.
History:
Her mother was a geisha. Her mother was named Keiko Nanzaki, a smart child of only two that disappointed her parents by deciding to be a geisha. Her father was from South Korea. He was an orphan and only by chance did he manage to earn the scholarship that allowed him to attend college overseas in Japan. He struggled with the life that met him there. His major was math and he found it hard to try and master the colorful language that was different from his own. During this time he met Keiko. Keiko was already 27 at the time and she had been a "geisha" or at least a maiko since she was 14. She ended up not leaving but she had a child named Yoko, who later became a maiko, with Junhu. She also had Tasako who followed the path of a geisha. Finally right before Junhu graduated and would leave she gave birth to Hanul. Although all her sisters had Japanese names Keiko made a promise to Junhu.
She said I will not leave this place for you, but the third daughter I have will be named by your choice. Hanul was the name Junhu chose, although he never believed he would father a third child anyway. Hanul means "sky" literally in Korean and he named it for Keiko. Keiko was a woman with many dreams during her lifetime. Junhu thought that some of them were tied down with her ambitions and thus chose sky to let the child go free. However only a year after Hanul arrived her mother passed away to an illness no one was truly able to place. Junhu had left before Keiko even knew she was expecting and all contact was broken between him and his daughters.
Her younger sister still remained. She was named Yoshiko. She had looked up to Keiko for her life. When she was younger her parents had always said "Be like Keiko..smart like her, but do not make the choice she did." they would say quietly before she went to school every morning. Yet Yoshiko became a maiko and disappointed her parents even more. Still she always looked up to Keiko. She was the beautiful sister, the smart one. Yet while Yoshiko was always obedient Keiko had always broken rules. When the raising of the child fell to her Yoshiko immediately protested.
Hanul was too much like her sister. Nearly a copy of the photos she had seen of her sister as a baby except with much darker eyes. Yoshiko felt betrayed by her sister, and for a good reason. Still she grudgingly raised the child during her early years. Hanul turned into a sort of little sister for the members of the okiya. She was loved by most of them but never received the attention that a mother can give her child. Still she grew up warm and free like the sky she was named for.
Once when she was five her father came to visit her. He was successful by then as a doctor. He asked each of his daughters whether they would like to come with him. At that point Yoko was already a shikomi and Tasako had no thoughts except of being a geisha. The choice was harder for Hanul. Sometimes she longed for something besides the flowers and willows. Something more wild and open. But she stayed with her sisters as was expected.
Yoko is now a older maiko that is nearly ready to become a geisha and Tasako just barely a maiko. Both of them expect her to follow their path but Hanul is still not sure. She has seen many of girls go through their training to follow the path to become a geisha. She knows that it is a respectable place in society. Yet sometimes when she is at school she gets glimpses of something bigger and that knocks her off course. Should she become a geisha? Or go out and be someone else?
Personality:She's wide and free like the sky, or at least like a bird. Her nickname is Kotori or 'little bird'. She has almost nothing she keeps to herself and her feelings are usually left in the open for others to see clearly. This also makes her very sensitive to things happening around her. She may not cry or seem upset but whenever anyone she knows seems off somehow she gets unsettled and worried.
When she gets angry she doesn't come out of it without a lot of coaxing. She can go on for days on a rampage. Luckily it doesn't happen often and there aren't too many things that she can't get over after a good night's sleep. When she's angry she's obviously very stiff and she doesn't have the usual playful quality to her. She used to have a bit of a pout as well but she's out grown that in her older years.
Random Facts: (Try to include at least two).
1.She loves sugar.
2.She gets extremely irritable around flowers and anyone who talks about flower arranging.
