Teruko wondered what was keeping her friend for so long as the minutes dragged by.

Almost running to where Teruko is waiting Masako says her, "I am so very sorry to keep you waiting, sensei picked today to ask me what I was doing about my poor dancing.
“After I told her you are couching me she was completely relaxed about it. See, is that not a good sign as to how she feels about your abilities?”

"I suppose, but I'm still nervous," said Teruko as she walked the familiar route from the school to home. On the way, she stopped in to say a quick hello to all the okaasan and seniors on the route, she she always did. Once she gained in rank, she wouldn't have to fill her time with quite so many paying of respects. When they finally got to the Mizuno okiya, Teruko bowed to the small shinto shrine near the entrance, and led her friend to the room she shared with her seniors.

Upon entering Masako sees a much nicer area than she has, so she tells Teruko, "Oh my Teruko this is so nice, more room too."

"Oh, but with all the money you're bringing to your okiya, surely they will make improvements. Now this is a shared room, so if one of my seniors wants the room to herself, I will have to oblige." She looked around to see if she had a cassette or cd with the kouta they were dancing to. "Hmmm... now what to do for the music? The bit we really need to get down at this point is synchronization, which we just can't do if I play the shamisen for you."

Laughing Masako tells Teruko, “I honestly believe the Yen men give me, that I give okasan goes into more expensive kimono so I seem more enticing to those foolish men.
“But be that as it may, can we not hum the music so we can both dance?”

"Oh the second verse, you have to go a bit more slowly. It's a sad passage, and our dance demonstrates that sorrow."

After they had practiced for an hour, the housekeeper came up to tell tham that Okaasan was serving tea in the main room downstairs. Teruko went downstairs and sat down across the table from her okaasan.

"How rude for her to leave when I had just invited her to tea. Are you sure that it's so wise for you to befriend that girl? I know her father is influential, and she might top some of the earnings charts for this year, but she is gaining such a poor reputation in the mix," said the okaasan of the Mizuno okiya.
"Oh, please don't bee too harsh, okaasan. She needs guidance and advice. Also, I don't think she meant to be rude. She probably thought you were telling her to leave indirectly."
