Teruha was a shikomi of the Mizuno okiya. She cooked and cleaned, went on errands for her elder sisters... Sometimes she even got to carry their kago or shamisen as they walked to ochaya.
Lessons were hard and the teachers strict.

"Teruko. Pensu-san, my name is Teruko." She rolled her eyes at the mistake and sighed good-naturedly. "Just help me unload the cart. This is a couple month's worth of rice, and of course there's the other groceries." She was wearing a komon (everyday wear, not as informal as yukata.) It had a pattern of red and black kiku (chrysanthemum) on a white background, and she paired it with a purpleish red obi and crimson obijime. Her sleeves were tied back with a spare himo (silk sash thing used to tie everything down before the obi is put in place) to keep them out of the way during for work. Her plain geta had already been left by the door, and the cart would go in back of the okiya when not in use.

"Don't take it so seriously. I smiled and laughed gently at your mistake, didn't I? You're new, so of course you won't know everyone's name right away." She lifted a big sack of rice, and carried it to the larder. When she came back, Pensuwana was still standing there.
"Oddly enough, Teruha is the geimyo I most desire. And everyone keeps mixing up my name with that. You're not the first, I doubt you'll be the last. Now grab something from the cart and carry it in, ok? I'll show you where the larder is if you don't already know."

"It's good that you want to be helpful. So, where did you come from?" asked Teruko, making small talk while carring loads of groceries. "I grew up in this city, but I wasn't lucky enough to be born into a hanamachi. Just had relatives who became geisha, you know?"

Deciding to minimize her background, Pensu replies, “My mother owns and operates the Sakura Geisha training school and tea house. I honestly never thought I’d ever leave there. Although I…I am so very sorry, all this sounds so like I am full of myself…(thinking, oh…I have dishonored my mother already…) Teruko-san…Pensu tells her, “I went from being the center of attraction to being…just another trainee. I am having a terrible time adjusting…you are so knowledgeable, and helpful, call me, when you hear me saying something best left not said…(Suddenly realizing how much of a total pain Pensu now has made herself seem, she burst out crying, and crumbles to the floor…sobbing her inability to make simple conversation.)

"Oh for goodness sake! Pull yourself together. Everyone who has decided to live this life has had their whole world change, and you're just a shikomi. You haven't made any real commitment to this okiya, so you can always return to your mother's house if you want to be a big fish in a little pond. But you chose to step out into the wider world, so you'll need to earn the admiration of others." The words were harsh, but the tone of voice was gentle.
"Now dry your eyes and help me with the last of this rice, if you can. Don't worry, I'll do as you asked and offer I disagreeistance when you look like you need it."

"And don't be too hard on yourself either!" laughed Teruko as the last of the rice went into the larder and the cart to its place behind the okiya.

- A new day - Teruko picked out a bright ensemble of orange and yellow, with cheerful plovers flitting about the sleeves. It was a plain yukata, but extremely cheerful and youthful. ooc: so, Pensuwana is turning into a religious fanatic? The way every other word out of her mouth is about the kami, you'd think she was about to go become a miko! Sorry to critique, just trying to figure out what direction you're taking your character in.

Teruko sat by the mirror, applying her makeup for the night's work.
