Like a new beginning, Masako, now more relaxed, eases through the tea ceremony. Even when she makes a mistake and the teacher jumps her, she is no longer upset over it.
All this because she now feels she is contributing more to her house, and her expenses will always be paid in advance, plus having okasan tell her how pleased she is with Masako.
Then quietly telling Teruko, "No matter how hard I try, I shall never be as artistic as you, your ceremony is truly living art Teruko…it really is.”

"Well, don't give up at the start. You never know what can come with practice."

Masako looking part sad and part silly kind of softly replies, “Thank you my friend…you do always seem to know what will give me hope for my artistic abilities, but Teruko you know as well as I, my whole being has been trained to see the material, and not artistic.
“You will be a great artist we both know, while I will only learn what I must to interest the customers at the ozashiki. You named me well back then as a little coquette interested in men and what they can give me, as in gifts, yen, or just warm sweet attentions.”

"You are what you make of yourself. If you want to become accomplished in the arts, you need only apply effort."

Masako not really wanting to apply herself that much, giggles silly as she says, "True enough, but we both know where my real interests lay...so most likely I will continue as I have been.
"While I am young and can get away with being foolish because of my age,"
Now trying hard to not burst out laughing, "I will play the flirt every one knows me to be...after all Teruko-san others must have some one to gossip about,"
Now really getting stupid acting, "And I have such a great beginning in that direction...teeheehee."

"There will come a time when that won't work anymore."

“I know…Yes, unfortunately some day even I will need to act more responsibly, but for as long as it lasts I will take full advantage of it. Age, adulthood, mature responsibilities come quick enough, as my mother told me, enjoy youth for as long as I can.”
