At least that's what I'm going to title this little diary. I mean to become Teruha someday, though I am but Teruko now.
My family is an aristocratic one. Not the old aristocracy of the Imperial Court, of course. (though I wouldn't be surprised if there had been some arranged marriage from one of those exalted families into the Shikabayashi) Nay, my family is samurai. Not daimyo level, but we didn't starve when so many samurai families were surpassed by merchants in wealth.
My several-times-great aunt Rurime was a geisha in the Edo Period. The family was really rural then, almost farmers. She was sold to the Hoshikari okiya, which became Masukari after a great fire ravaged the hanamachi and many okiya had to be closed. Hoshikari and Masudo merged to continue to operate. She eventually became the geisha Okiku, and was well regarded.

Mother wasn't happy that I wasn't going to work as an office lady for a few years after high school before marrying a man with a promising career then settling into a life of housewifery. Father, on the other hand, could see the fire in my eyes. He knew that I would not be satisfied with that.

Akeme has become a minarai, and I must admit I am jealous. We were peers before, almost equals, but now she had gone ahead of me. I feel left behind, and it seems I must make new friends with those who are still shikomi.

Okaasan found an oneesan for me. Very soon I shall cease to be Shikabayashi Teruko and become Teruha! Once my time as a minarai is done.
